How to Plant a Mature Tree (10 ft+): Step-by-Step Guide

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

A 10–20 ft tree is an investment. Planted well, it establishes within one season and looks finished from day one. These are the steps our planting crews follow.

1. Prepare before the tree arrives

2. Dig the right pit

Make the pit at least twice as wide as the root ball and only as deep as the root ball. For a 12–15 ft tree that usually means about 3 × 3 × 3 ft. Loosen the sides of the pit so roots can spread.

3. Set the tree at the correct height

The top of the root ball should sit level with, or slightly above, the surrounding soil. Planting too deep is the most common cause of failure in large trees.

4. Backfill and form a basin

Cut away the bag completely. Backfill with the dug soil mixed with about 30% compost or well-rotted manure, firming in layers to remove air pockets. Build a raised ring of soil to make a watering basin.

5. Stake against wind

Use three stakes or guy-ropes with soft ties. Leave a little movement, because trees that sway slightly grow stronger roots. Remove the stakes after 6–12 months.

6. Water deeply

Soak the basin right after planting. For the first 8 weeks, water deeply 2–3 times a week (more in peak summer), then reduce gradually. Deep, infrequent watering is better than daily sprinkling.

7. Mulch and monitor

Add a 3-inch layer of mulch to the basin, keeping it away from the trunk. Some leaf drop in the first weeks is normal transplant shock. Look for new growth as the sign the tree has established.

Best time to plant

Early monsoon and the post-monsoon months are ideal. Summer planting works too, as long as watering is reliable.
